Fender Flares A wheel flare is traditionally used to make the fender wider on off-road vehicles. Also known as “wheel arch extensions” they basically extend the factory fender wider on a 4x4 truck to cover tire and wheel packages that are too large to fit within the body of the truck. Without these extensions, these oversized tires would stick out wider than the body of the truck, which is illegal in most places.
